Peter, the founder of the company was immersed in the construction industry even before he could walk. His father and grandfather prided themselves on building high quality custom homes since the early 1970's. Naturally as dads do, Peter was given front row access to the hard work and dedication required in the construction industry. There is pictures of Peter with a soother in his mouth, on construction sites all over the greater Edmonton area. As time went on, there was one thing they did notice however, little Pete was always outside playing in the dirt and staring in awe of the earthmoving equipment at work. This blossomed into a love of machinery and an entire childhood of watching machines at work. Operating some machines at a very young age, Peter had found his natural calling. Peter's true passion for the industry combining with his work ethic meant he was unstoppable from that point on. Fast forward too today, and you can still see the twinkle in his eye when he watches his nephews playing with construction toys on the living room floor, or better yet going for a ride in one of "Uncle Pete's" big machines.
We receive this question surprisingly often. The resounding simple answer is: We will take care of you. Depending on the project at hand and municipality you or your project resides in, there are different requirements for this. Pompei Excavation will contact the appropriate municipality or project consultant(commercial) to determine the requirements and how to obtain them to complete the necessary work. We do this step during the estimating phase of the work, so in case there is fees/charges, or a specified material we do not typically spec for that scope of work, we can accurately include them in the estimate. Some Permits are as simple as just work notice permits and there is no further action required, others can be multiple parts or stage inspections and approvals are required every step along the way.
Pompei Excavation exclusively handles our own first call and second call utility locate procedures. Even if you just had a first call locate done, We will have our own completed before initiating our work. This allows us to see more then just the pin flags when we arrive. Many people do not know there is a "back end" to a locate request where all the declared underground infrastructure in the dig area and for some distance outside of it is listed on our locate ticket. This information helps us to confirm and double check that everything listed has in fact been located, and if it hasn't we have the appropriate contact info listed for that agency to consult with them on their infrastructure and whether we are safe to dig or not.
To go one step further, many people do not realize that a "first call" or free utility locate does not mark out every single utility on your property or project. They simply mark out from the main line or trunk line, to your appropriate metering device(gas meter, power meter, water meter, etc). Everything past that point is known as "secondary services", so these require a second privately owned locate company to come out and locate those services for us. Knowledge of your property's infrastructure is an immense asset to us when adding onto or installing new water, gas, power, septic, drain, conduit lines. Often times property owners or project managers have pictures, markers, drawings, or even a general knowledge of the vicinity of these things. We will consult with you and make a plan forward using this information, and deciding whether we need a secondary locate or not to proceed.
